Yesterday, driving along to Penzance, there was a marrow lying end smashed off on the road. There were a load of stones lying alongside. Someone had stuck the marrow out of their car, scraping it along the hedgerow pulling down part of the hedge, by the looks of it. There was another marrow further down the road - in the same condition.
Here's the photo evidence:
As you can see, I thought this worthy of a detailed study!
MY GOD THESE PEOPLE
There are lots of contorted people doing (to me) bewildering things down here just the same as in East London. Is it poverty as people would say around C**** Street, or 'inbred'ness like they'd say around here. People rotating around and around in their own territory in a way that is baffling to observers.
Alex Brattell's photograph (above) helps put this into clear image. This picture could well have been taken in Penzance, helped by the granite looking walls in the background.
See picture in context here
All the same, the 'incident with the marrow' made me think that at least this sort of thing doesn't happen that often. (Robin suggested someone had stolen the marrows from the little stall down the road that sells the farmer's surplus produce. Out here in the country, at least you can leave something outside your door without it getting pinched and destroyed most of the time.)
Marrows UPDATE: 21/07/04. The man up the road has stopped putting vegetables out on his stall.
Marrows UPDATE: 22/09/04. Vegetables were back for a while, then, sadly, stopped again because the money container (an old milk churn with a slit cut into the top, for coins) was stolen.
