A Delayed Dedication
Little did I know that just as I was writing London in Black and White, Guy Green, the cinematographer of David Lean's Great Expectations and Oliver Twist died in LA (14 Sept.), aged 91.

And Kay Walsh last April. Just watched it, and then read she'd designed the wordless opening as well as played Nancy. Also that she hadn't liked that Lean wouldn't let her be more dirty-looking. All of it simply amazing, a glorious film, incredible sets. And to find Anthony Newley as the Artful Dodger, who'd go on to 'Stop the World' and 'The Roar of the Greasepaint'. And Diana Dors as Charlotte whom I saw onstage in London in a fluff-comedy (I've forgotten the name of it) once she'd gone sex-blonde and they started always calling her 'Miss Diana Dors'. John Davies as Oliver is perfection.
