well, I know there are some infamous bloggers who think it's funny to pose as people they're not and make facetious comments, but I do believe that the latest comment on the town crier thread really is from the Town Crier to the Mayor of London: his vocation, if not his identity, is confirmed by the fact that he comments most resoundingly, entirely in capitals:
RE YOUR STORY OF THE TOWN CRIER OF TRURO HIS NAME IS JOHN SWEETMAN AND HE IS INDEED AN OFFICIAL TOWN CRIER , AND IT WAS MY PLEASURE A FEW YEARS AGO TO WELCOME JOHN TO LONDON HE DOES A WONDERFULL PR JOB FOR TRURO AND LONG MAY HE RING HIS BELL LOUD AND CLEAR. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN.
It's surprising, but of course historically fitting given their communicative role, that the national town crier network is so net-savvy. Of course it may all be a hoax, but I'm looking forward to seeing which town will represent next...
There are independent witness statements to indicate I was menacing Denholm Elliott's daughter at the time.
